Upgrade followed by infections

Thread view:
pokerdragon@hotmail.com - 13 Jun 2005 18:42 GMT
Upgraded to 12.5.3, from 12.5.0, on Saturday.  No problems Saturday, no
problems processing Sunday (mostly C programs with a single Java app
(piped through Sun Java Application Server using jDTS).  Today, started
receiving the following errors when processing started to get heavy:

04:00000:00502:2005/06/13 12:07:17.98 kernel  current process
(0x2de002ea) infected with 11
04:00000:00502:2005/06/13 12:07:17.98 kernel  SQL causing error :
UPDATE <blah blah> SET <this> FROM <that> WHERE <something>
04:00000:00502:2005/06/13 12:07:17.98 kernel  lasterror = 0 preverror =
0 transtate = 0
04:00000:00502:2005/06/13 12:07:17.99 kernel  pc: 0x000000008042e13c
xsc__syslogs_setscan+0x1a8(0x00000000020000ed, 0x000001000aaedb28,
0x0000000000000000, 0x000000000000130a, 0x0000000000000000)

Also receiving a good number of "infected with 10".  Seeing several
dozen per 15 minutes.  Client connections get dropped, but this isn't
being indicated in the log.

Are there known issues with Sun One Java App Server or jTDS and 12.5.3?
Or anything else we should know?  Nothing changed between this weekend
and this morning.  We also changed hardware during the upgrade, but we
discovered these errors were occuring during our testing (nobody told
us), so I don't believe this is a network-related issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Version 12.5.3 of *what*, for heaven's sake?

Nowhere in your message do you say which RDBMS system you're actually
talking about.

Try reading Eric Raymond's "How to ask questions the smart way":

  http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

and you may begin to understand why your query does not contain enough
information to allow people to help you.

Result of cross-posting to the Sybase group.  Version 12.5.3 of Sybase.

Though I apologize for the omission, I have to ask if Mr. Raymond also
wrote any articles entitled "How to ask questions without sounding like
a condescending a.shole"?  Something simple along the lines of "Please
let us know what RDBMS you are referring to" would have accomplished
exactly the same thing in a much simpler, nicer way.  Wouldn't you
agree?

Amusing.  Apparently you did not bother to read the link.  From the link
identified, and therefore purportedly by Mr. Raymond ....

"
... have a reputation for meeting simple questions with what looks like
hostility or arrogance. It sometimes looks like we're reflexively rude to
newbies and the ignorant. But this isn't really true.
"

There's more, too!  Worth a read ... ;-)

Yup, busted.  I didn't read the link.  Silly me for assuming that I
would know how to ask a technical question after having done it for
almost 40 years.

Purely for reference and to ensure neither I nor anyone else do not
take the above quote out of context, I did read the passage containing
that quote, even though the link was given to supposedly show how to
ask a question, not given to justify the negativity of the question's
response.

Not that it does.

As for "time sinks", how much less time would it have taken to simply
ask "Version 12.5.3 of what?" instead of "Version 12.5.3 of *what*, for
heaven's sake?  <snip next 6 lines of meaningless text>"?  Or to
simply, as is also mentioned in the above link, not responded at all?

I'm not really justifying excessive rudeness, but you do need to understand this is
usenet. Replies are not just for you but for all readers, lurkers, etc.. If it does make
someone stop and think before posting, it accomplishes something.

Actually, you multi-posted. No one here can tell that you also posted in the
Sybase group. As such, given the context, his recommendation that you
provide more detail in your question was entirely appropriate.

Would you like other links explaining why it is not good to multi-post? I'm
sure Andrew will be along any minute...
