NASA's Fastscript3D  (Java 3D + VRML + Javascript): Does anyone have a copy?

Thread view:
kyle manjaro - 14 Mar 2005 04:46 GMT
Hi all:

A friend of mine got me all excited about a Javascript extension to Java 3D
that worked with VRML. I 've looked all over the web and so far found only
'ancient' postings to NASA's jpl site (a Patti Koenig) as copied below this
message. Does anyone out there still have a copy of Fastscript 3D and the
examples talked about ??? Did it work ?? (there seemed to be some comments
made on JavaKB that raised this question).

If nobody remembers this and/or has a copy, can anyone suggest an
alternative that accomplishes the same ? (i.e. rapid simple 3D examples
using a scripting language with Java 3D and involving VRML models) ??? Feel
free to mail me directly at kilamanjaro@mac.com.

I'd appreciate ANY info at all! Thanks in advance to all!

Kyle

Here's the post from 2002 that I've found
(http://fastscript3d.jpl.nasa.gov. does NOT work) and so far no old mirror
sites (if there ever were any):

A JavaScript Companion to Java3D

FastScript3D is a web friendly companion to Java3D that makes it easy
to get started writing 3D web applets using Java3D via JavaScript and
HTML. FastScript3D is open source. This web site provides examples,
documentation and free download of the most current code base:

http://fastscript3d.jpl.nasa.gov.

I am hoping to get constructive feedback from members of this
newsgroup, on both the software and web site. Please note that setup of
Java and
Java3D is required for the applets on this site to run properly.
The jar is available for download now, and Source code will be
available for download on December 1, 2002.

Thankyou in advance for your inputs! :-)

Hey Kyle --

Any luck with this??  I have tried contacting both Sun and JPL and have
not had any luck finding out what happened to FastScript3D.  I am
really disappointed that it is gone :((

Hi, I am the author of that software.  I no longer work at JPL.  I
thought the website would remain active there though!  Something
happened to me on the newgroups (I got flamed *hard* to put it mildly)
and because of what happend I lost my motivation to market it
any further.  The software was in a pretty solid state (the only
thing not working was picking of the GEOMTEXT primitive - I got no
other reported bugs).  Maybe I did not promote the software hard
enough, but I thought it would take off better than it has so far.
The code was open-sourced by JPL and I have been comtemplating
putting it back on the web .... Is there any significant interest
in my doing so?  The software can load in vrml & other models with the
extension commands (e.g. GEOMVRML) but had its own set of commands for
creating animation and articulation.  In other words, it does not play
vrml movies.

Hello Patti,

The answer to your question is YES! YES! YES!!!!

If you do a search on Google, I think you'll find that there is quite a
lot of interesting in FastScript3D!

I am currently a graduate student doing a research project on scripting
languages for simulation models.  Last semester I did a project on
JAVA3D, and this semester I was planning on doing a follow up on
FastScript3D as a scripted interface to easily do simulation models
using a set of predefined objects.  Needless to say, I was devestated
when I went to the JPL site and everything was gone!

I am more than willing to offer any assitance I can into breathing life
into FastScript3D again - or at least making what was one available.  I
think they are quite a lot of educational institutions that find
FastScript3D useful.  I have hosting/domain space available as well.

At the very least, is there a location where we could find all the
related documents, files, and examples?

Thanks,
Dave Hudson

Please, Please, Please, to echo an arlier sentiment.  I've wanted to test
the Java3D waters as I'm involved in immersive imaging for the web and this
technology seems well suited for certain aspects. Direct e-mail
